Cob Homes and a Dream

Have I told you about our new dream?

What if you could have a brand new home for a few thousand dollars?
No mortgage?
 No home loans?
No monthly payments?
What if you could design it anyway you want?
Out of all-natural materials?
What if it required less heating in the winter and less cooling in the summer because the material it's made of is an amazing insulator?
What if it is artistic and beautiful and you could create pretty much anything you want in your home because the material is flexible and easy to build with?

Sounds too good to be true right?
Why doesn't everyone do this?

Really? I have no idea.
Why doesn't everyone do this?

Let me show you what I mean:

Looks kind of like stucco huh? Reminds me of the Arizona houses.

I adore the curves. The ceiling and in the windows.

Shoe cubbies, wood-burning stove, big windows, curves, built-in furniture

Isn't that just gorgeous? It's inspiring.

If there is one thing I love more than any other feature in a home, it's nooks. I am a nook lover. They are so cozy and usually by a window perfect for reading or reflecting.

Two stories.

Earth tones are just so calming and grounding. You can paint the walls though if you want color but I am loving the warm feel of the natural colors of the earth.

How fun to have carvings on the walls outside.

Very cool swirls.

Look what you can do on the artistic end. The details are gorgeous.

I would make it perfect for lounging with nice curved head rest of sorts.

Ahhhh. What a feeling this creates. I think of those houses in Greece.

I love the ability to really just do what you want- I love textured ceilings.

The windows are way too small but how create with the staircase on the outside.

Breakfast nook

Doesn't that look like art? Art that you can sit on. How fun to climb up there for a kid. Homework spot maybe?

Cool canyon feel.

Reading/sleeping nook.

Amazing skylights.

Now, some of these homes do look like hobbit homes, but they are cute and cozy and woodsy. So story book, fairy tale. Could you imagine growing up somewhere like that?

The built-in furniture is so cool.

Isn't this a kid's dream? So fun! And beautiful.

Stained glass wall. So pretty.
Here's a link to a website that explains a little more about this type of home:

On this same website they also have reasons why people chose to build cob homes and I'll list a few here but check out the website for more (http://www.thiscobhouse.com/characteristics-of-cob-homes/):
Owner Built
Cob houses can usually be built by the owner. You don’t need a degree in architecture or to be a structural engineer to build a cob home. Many people build their own homes after taking a one week long cob building workshop.
It is very rewarding to be able to build your home with your own two hands.
Healthy
Unlike conventional homes which are constructed with synthetic, industrial-formed materials, cob homes are built almost entirely out of natural, clean materials.
Industrial homes are full of indoor air pollutants and off-gassing of chemicals contained in the building materials. Cob homes do not have this problem. In fact, cob actually “breathes” through its tiny pores and keeps air fresh and clear. If you suffer from indoor allergies then living in a cob house could significantly improve your quality of life by eliminating the toxins that may cause them.
Strong
The straw, which is part of the cob mix, acts like a natural re-bar to hold the whole structure together as one monolithic piece. This makes cob homes extremely solid and resistant to earthquakes. Many cob homes have lasted for hundreds of years with minimal upkeep, whereas wooden structures generally survive only a few generations.
Build a cob home for your family and it will last for many many generations to come.
Acoustic Privacy
Earthen walls have very good sound-absorbing properties that keep it quiet inside, both from exterior noises and noise generated in the same building.
Termite Proof
Since cob is a mixture of soil, aggregate sand, and straw it is not attractive to termites. To add to that, cob homes have not been known to become burrowing grounds for insects or animals either.
Fire Proof
Cob does not catch fire. However, still be aware of your ceiling or roof as it might not be flame resistant like the body of the cob home.

Can you see why I'm so in love?
Can you see why it seems like a no-brainer to build one of these?
A home is a central part of the American Dream right?
Why does that have to include a huge amount of debt and payments every month?

So much artistic freedom and expression in each of these.
So cozy and warm and beautiful and functional and strong and fun.
And actually good for your health. (I really love that aspect too.)

I walk down the street now and look at all the mundane houses- the ones we all just see and accept as what we are supposed to live in.
What would each home look like if the owner could have designed it.
What would that look like to walk down a street of art? You would see creativity and personality and feel the joy each person has in their life as they create. Everyone's homes would look like they are from a fairy tale. Or you could design it square and straight too. But what if it didn't have to be straight and square to be structurally sound? What would people do?

Wouldn't that be magical?
So this is my dream.
To have a home- a creative, artistic, child's dream home (there will be slides and little nooks and bunk bed cubbies) that emanates creativity and beauty and comfort.

What do you think?
Have you heard of homes like this before?
What would your home look like?

The Cemetery

This cemetery is probably the prettiest one I've ever seen. The trees are gorgeous and in perfect rows lining the pathways. It's the best place to bike. Grant and I always look for the squirrels. Most recently we found a squirrel that was "barking" squeaks at us. Every squeak elicited a laugh from Grant so it was quite the scene to watch. I actually was kind of scared it was going to jump down and attack us- I felt bad for the poor creature so we left it alone and enjoyed the trees.

It's so beautiful.
I always thought cemetery's were supposed to be creepy but I always feel curiously peaceful about all these people. All the love they shared during their lives. That's what I think about as I look at each name and inscription. They each had their struggles and heartaches and triumphs and joy. The word "romantic" always goes through my mind as a word to describe it.

What a lovely place and I love living close enough to visit frequently.
I'm excited for what it will look like in the fall with all the bright leaves and with fresh fallen snow. Won't that be just lovely?

Week 16 of Pregnancy

I feel gooooood.

So, so good.

This is the BEST part of pregnancy.
Nausea finally has subsided,
I can pretty much tell everyone now that we are expecting,
and my belly is showing a little bit.  It's funny because the picture I took at 13 weeks surprised me that I was already showing but I think with baby #2 your body goes, "oh yah, I remember, I need to stretch out" and so it's pretty much ready before the baby is even that big. So, the baby is now starting to get bigger but my belly looks the same as it did at 13 weeks. Pictures were fun every week before but I'm thinking every month sounds reasonable now.

And of course the movements!!! I can feel the babe moving now and it is the BEST. It's not consistent but I know it's the baby which is so so fun.
I have energy and can get ready and get things done.
Seriously so much energy- I have so many things I've started working on now!

This is fun.

I do have to admit I'm a little nervous for two.
It's becoming real thinking of caring for a new baby and a toddler.
It makes me catch my breath a bit and wonder how it's going to go.

How about I'll worry about that when the baby's here.
For now, I'm going to "enjoy" pregnancy and have fun with my little boy until the new one is here.

Dishwasher Follow-UP

Hi there.

I know what you want to know. You have been dying right?
You want to know if the dishwasher is everything I thought it would be?

If it works first of all?
If it fits in my teeny-tiny kitchen?
If it really makes my life so much better that I think things like, "Yes! I am a success!" instead of "I fail miserably at everything- just look at my piles of dishes!"
If it has changed my life?
If I have a billion new friends because of it?
If I'm rich and famous now?
If all of sudden I am beautiful again?

Okay, so other than the rich and famous part- YES!!! Yes! A thousand times YESSSSS!
It is everything and more than I dreamed of.

Now I can do the dishes and....
*Get ready! Hello makeup and hair (okay, I admit the hair thing doesn't usually happen still but it looks better crazy when I have makeup on).
*Play with Grant
*Vacuum- I know how can someone do the dishes AND vaccum at the same time?
*Take a showER!

And much more! I mean I literally used to pick and choose between these things- should I do the dishes or take a shower right now? Hmmm.... I guess I could shower later when the baby is in bed, might lose some sleep- oh well I have to do those dishes.

Oh and coolest thing ever. So I keep the house a lot cleaner and I am usually ready for the day and it's been so neat because people just drop by and guess what?! I'm ready for them. Oh and I'm also feeling good enough to go out and about (I can't believe how feeling good makes you want to go do things- duh) and I've met all these cute little moms at the park with little boys the same age as mine and I just feel like life is so enjoyable.

Is it all because of the dishwasher?

Really?

Of course not. I truly believe I could have changed my thoughts and turned my life around to be more positive and just let a few things go but the dishwasher automatically brings these thoughts to me that help me be positive without even trying. It's great.

I love Bertha. That's her name. It means "bright and glorious" which is now how every day is with her around.

I know that bottom part is falling off but hey it works and it was free and it is glorious!

15 months

What can I even say about this ball of energy and love?

Can I just show you a couple cute things?

I really wanted a picture with Great-Grandma but G was not having it. At least she's happy.

We went to the fair! We fed the sheep some grass.

Sometimes he'll do the slide- not very often- but when he does, he seems to love relish it. Once he reaches the bottom he signs, "more" very seriously. I don't know why he doesn't do it more often?

This is his FAVORITE thing to do. Seriously. Dishes with mama. If nothing is cheering him up- if he's teething or even not feeling very good- do the dishes and *bing* smiles light up his cute little face.
Hey, I get a happy boy and dishes done? Sounds good to me.

The school claims to be "family friendly". After attending this little family day they put on, I believe them.  I really like that a lot.

Great pictures right?

I have noticed I really don't get a lot of pictures with the kid. I am so happy he semi-smiled for this one. I will cherish this one I'm sure.

The Facebook Break

I have noticed I have become quite opinionated as of late.
Not that that's bad.
Not that I want to stop having my opinions or sharing them.

It's just I've noticed this thing that I have now when someone throws an idea or thought out there, I want to see what I have to think about it so I'll read whatever material is posted and then think and ponder and sometimes I already know what I think so I skim the article but then I comment to let "the world" know of a different opinion if I disagree, and that I support the article if I do agree.

It's really okay, it is, as long as it's under control.
I have to say folks, I was not under control. I was reading and posting on everything and everyone's walls like everyone should be gifted with my thoughts and it was just stressing me out. It was like I couldn't resist or something. I just had to let them know what I thought. And a lot of the stuff I felt was important and I am totally fine with whatever has been said and the respectful disagreements but whew! A girl needs a break.

So here I am, on break. On my quiet little blog saying my thoughts and sending them out there- mostly for me to look back on and someday go, "Wow, I can't believe I was on facebook that much that I had to take a break- I hardly even look at that thing anymore unless I want to contact someone".

I am very happy that I have opinions though- those of you who knew me in high school and younger would know that I just happily liked things that other people liked and didn't really know what to think about controversial issues- I never gave it much thought. I was really wrapped up in a tight little world of being content and okay with not caring about a lot of things.

Possibly part of me is like "YAH! I think things! I'm going to tell you what I think because I've thought! Go girl!" ha ha.

A lot changes when you have to take responsibility for a child's life. I'm sure it started changing before then but that's when I really noticed it. You have to start forming opinions about things because you do care so much.

So now I have opinions about just about everything and if I don't know much about something, I'll read about it and research it a bit, then form one quickly.

It's new and different and I know some people are a little alarmed by it- but don't worry- I'm still me- just opinionated now and ready to tell you why I think certain things now. It's okay if we don't agree too. It's okay if you do things differently. I'm totally 100% fine with being me and learning as I go and forming my beliefs and convictions about life.

Which was part of the reason for the break. I really want to spend some time reveling in my new opinions and thoughts and allowing myself to think what I think without having to defend it, without having to feel like I should let someone "out there" know about it and really to not feel bad if I believe something or want something. There is a certain guilt I've noticed that I'll have if I want something or believe something that someone just can't accept or they think I'm "better" than them for wanting something in my life.  I am not trying to be better than anyone. I'm just trying to live the life I want to live and do it happily and joyfully and I really don't want to have to feel guilty about it. I just want to be at peace with it for now. I'm willing and open to learn and change my opinions but for now, I just want peace.

And so far, today, in the past 10 hours it's been a really great feeling.

I might do more blogging though- watch out.

I don't know when I'll go back. I actually hope it's a while.

Sweet Potato Fry Helper

I have a little helper in the kitchen. I can work if I give him something he can do.
He was very good at putting the sweet potato fries in the bag.

One by one, so dedicated.

I think he even added some of his own special ingredients.
